Wayfinding and Signage Design
The Goal
To redesign the Humber Arboretum signage system to create an engaging, educational and inclusive wayfinding experience for younger visitors. The arboretum is a living outdoor classroom, rich in flora, fauna and eco trails. My goal was to cater to school field trips, families with young children and people who appreciate a little playful design.
The Process
By using bold, AODA-compliant type and a palette of primary nature colors but highlighted to contrast Humber's signature blue, the signs accentuate the information, stand out without being too bright and educate visitors of the natural diversity found within the arboretum.
I started by creating a user persona to guide my design choices. For the informative signs I used slightly playful shapes to draw the attention of the target audience. Since Humber Arboretum is home to many different species it was easy making the information signage interesting. I decided to keep the way-finding signs more simple and clear with white backgrounds and bold text, but added a touch of playfulness in the lines and colors.
