The Challenge

Young people care deeply about the climate crisis but often feel overwhelmed, under-informed, or like the solutions are out of reach. Traditional environmental campaigns are either too juvenile or too preachy for teens.

How can I create a climate communication tool that is emotionally resonant, age-appropriate and action-oriented without losing personality?

Target Audience

Age: 13–16
Personality: Curious, Compassionate, Visual Learners
Needs: Climate literacy, Actionable tips, Emotional relatability

The Process

I started out with a lot of sketching for both the zine and the insert. Using illustrations as the primary visuals for the Spriggle Kids insert and imagery for the Spriggle Zine. Working in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop I achieved the effects, layout and style that I envisioned for both assets.

Print & Interaction

I had both assets printed on 32lb paper to give it a more sustainable feel. The zine was printed at 8.5x11 and the insert at 5.5x8.5 for a perfect fit. I shared the insert on a sunny picnic day with 4 participant kids (ages 5-10) from a class I volunteer to teach at my Church. This was the true test of the insert's design for the target audience. They were happily engaged and interacted well with the activities. Some parents have already requested copies to add to their child's reading stack, which was a very fulfilling moment at the end of this project.
